Hard to believe it’s been 18 years. He’d have liked what’s become of his family—especially his grandkids and great grandkids.

Miles Meyerson, 71, former editor of the Southwest News-Herald newspaper and journalism instructor at Moraine Valley Community College, died Saturday in Veterans Administration Hospital, Hines.

Miles Meyerson in 1983

He came to the Chicago area from Michigan in 1968 to join the faculty at Moraine Valley in Palos Hills as instructor and student-newspaper adviser. In 1981, he left teaching to become editor of the Southwest News-Herald; he retired in 1986.

“He had an unfailing sense of humor and an encyclopedic knowledge of jokes,” said his son, Charles, news director at WNUA-FM. “He was a demanding teacher. He was my biggest fan and my harshest critic, and that’s the way he was with all his students.”

Mr. Meyerson, who was born in Detroit, began his journalism career in 1941 as a reporter for the International News Service’s Detroit bureau. He served with the Army in India and Burma during World War II. He got a degree in English from Wayne State University, then joined the Herald newspaper chain in the Detroit area in 1949.

In 1965, he left the Herald to teach and supervise publications for Macomb County (Mich.) Community College.

Besides his son, he leaves his wife of 12 years, Florence; two daughters, Lisa Siemer and Julie; two stepdaughters, Gail Kelly and Jean Lubeckis; and nine grandchildren. Memorial services will be at noon Sunday at Blake Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W. 103d St., Oak Lawn.

… and his first wife—my mom, Agnes Bryen Meyerson—died in 1970.
